No Five Minute Time limit and No Robert's Rules.  Just Wings, Beer and Politics.

Kevin (@Mac_Daddy) and I (@DanaPopadynetz) are excited to announce the inaugural St. Albert Poliwings evening (@poliwings).

We will be gathering at the Celtic Knot at 8PM on Monday July 21st for good beer, good wings and good discussion on Politics.

We hope that you are able to make it out and join other members of the community, members of council and other politically inclined minds from around our great city.

Please let Kevin and I know if you are abel to attend so we can relay numbers back to Celtic Knot.

Hope to see you all there!

Dana and Kevin

So fellas, how did the Poliwings night go? I would love to have been there, but sadly it started at my bedtime. Getting uo at 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. To keep this site going is part of the package. [wink]

Poliwings went very well, there were 14 people who attended last night, Two Councillors were there, Cathy Heron and Tim Osborne. As well Ryan Hastman and Michael Cooper attended as well.

There was plenty of discussion on all fronts, municipal, provincial and federal. The Draper lawsuit, backyard chickens, the PCAA leadership race and the PC St. Albert riding were among the topics, people moved around he room throughout the night and a good time, was, had by all.

Tentatively we are scheduling the date for the next one to be on August 18 (when council resumes after their summer break).

Kevin:

Good idea, IMO.

Cooper attended: that's interesting. Smart move, I guess: keep Brent from stealing a march.
Light attendance; but Rome wasn't built in a day. Good learning opportunity.
Did any folks who had just wandered in, thirsty, join in?

I have a hearing handicap. Tinnitis (can't handle more than one sound source at a time). In a noisy environment, the competing sounds just become a buzz.
Sounded to me as though the room was going to be noisy. 'S why I didn't attend.

If you should find next time that a private gathering is preferable (everyone is there for the same purpose), maybe consider:
-Hogshead Brewery (in Riel) with a smallish taproom that can accommodate maybe 40. Hospitable publican, reasonable prices on the variety of interesting beer they brew. $5 for roughly 3-ounce samples of five beers that they brew. Taproom is usually open after 2 PM (I think). I'm pretty sure you can make a deal with them (reserve the room for a private gathering)
-rent the main floor of the Community Hall. Handles 200. Get a license and hold a kegger.
Food, I'm sure, can be ordered in at both places.

It's been my experience that keeping a room focused on one political topic at a time is hell on wheels!
Many folks have a pet topic that they consider the most important, and have little patience in paying attention to anyone else's topic.
I hope you have less frustration with that than I have had.

I think you have the seed of a good idea. Best wishes.

The essential elements to hosting a public gathering are:
-advertise to the max,
-show a good time to the folks who show up,
-make 'em want to attend the next gathering, and bring their friends.
Ignore any one at your peril.

I am extremly happy that with only 24 hours notice we were able to wrangle up 14 attendees. The event was very well received and I look forward to next month!

I thought about making a little more structured, but it was great to see everyone interacting on different topics and moving about the room. I have not had one single negative feedback from it.

I did a phone interview with Glenn from the leader today, so watch for the story on Thuraday!

I'd love to have come, but I already had commitments for that night. I only saw the information on MyBirdie the same day that the meeting was going to be held.

Hello MyBirdie!

The second Poliwings event is booked for Monday August 18th at 8PM.  We are being hosted by the HogsHead Brewery and Taphouse in Riel Park.

I really hope that some / all of you are able to make it out!  It was a great time last month!

@ dana & kevin:

Hogshead! Good thinking. I bet that'll work great !

You seem to have things well in hand, but a couple of friendly suggestions:
-the taproom is smallish, so maybe:
-tell folks what the room limit is, and,
-warn them to get there before the thundering herd.
-and maybe suggest that people do the $5 sampling of five brews before deciding which pint to buy,
-and @dana: why not encourage your fellows on SDAB to attend ? Get to know folks.

Best wishes,
geddy

@ Geddy - we are going to try and move poliwings around to different venues and businesses in the city. As we are still growing we figured this would be the best time to introduce some people to Hogshead. The first night had 14 people and we are hoping to be around 25 this time which still leaves us some room at the Taproom.

Of course our key point in the gatherings is beer and wings along with some great political banter. We will start looking and working on other locations as soon as this one is in the books. Any suggestions (and contacts if you have them) are always appreciated.

It would be great, as Dana said, if some of the regular posters from the forum could make it out. Ted was at the first one, but I unfortunately didn't get around the room down to him to chat before he left.

What we would really like to see is anyone call a poliwing gathering when hey feel the need for some chinwagging. This is something that a larger and active group of people can facilitate.

I am very much looking forward to Monday night (I will be celebrating the last Monday night this year before my birthday).

Kevin

Why do you choose to hold these gatherings on a council night every time? By the time I spend 'at work' (in my mind since 3:00 and now 2:00) viewing council, I am beat. Would it not be better to hold them on any other night to allow more of us to attend?

I am up by at least 4:00 a.m. to get SAP online daily, so it becomes a very long day. [wink]

The decision to hold them on council night was so we could stream the shaw broadcast if people wanted. Additionally we wanted council members to come without have to take up another evening.

Fair enough although it seems to defy the odds that you can stream a Shaw broadcast at any venue to anyone other than a Shaw subscriber, (which I am not).

At any rate it makes any attempt at attendance impossible for me. Good luck with the next one.

Actually, this is the first council night we have scheduled poliwings on. They have both been Monday nights, 8 pm was the time that most of the first few participants asked for. There was no council meeting before the first gathering.

As Dana said we originally planned this around council meetings as this was what was being discussed. In my response to Geddy earlier, I mentioned it would be great if others used the poliwing theme, the Facebook group and twitter account to bring people together for informal gatherings.

I am all for other options, but one key point right now is that Dana and I will pick nights that work for either of us until the group gets large enough to self sustain. No night will work for everyone, we acknowledge that. But at this point to say "Why do you choose to hold these gatherings on a council night every time?" Is really unfair and very inaccurate.

Kevin

My mistake. Since they were both held on Mondays, I just assumed the first one was on a council meeting night as well.

But it is a bit of an overreaction to call such a minor slip "unfair and very inaccurate", don't you think? [rolleyes]

Thanks to everyone who came out to Poliwings tonight!  It was great to see Shelley (Sorry we did not get an opportunity to chat more), Jared, Malcom Parker, Gilles Prefontaine, Wes Broadhead and Stephen Kahn to name a few.  Another successful evening!

Is September 23 set in stone? I believe that SATA will be meeting that night and I would like to attend.

You see right through me Ted, this is exactly why Tuesday the 23rd was picked. If I tried to deny it, you would be right anyway. I suggest you write a letter to the paper and complain about it, because as you know an informal group that enjoys a good drink and conversation is a threat to SATA and you.

For the record, Dana suggested September 22, I commented let's try Tuesday night instead as Don Sinclair had commented he would prefer it not to be Council nights. We announced it on Twitter and on Facebook and via email to a few people. The next day I realized we had picked the same night as the SATA meeting when I was adding it to my calendar (I had planned on attending the meeting). I sent Dana a message letting him know, Dana asked if we should change it. I suggested not as we had already announced it, only three of our previous attendees to date were affected (that we knew of). We decided to leave the date with the hopes that some might come over after the SATA meeting wrapped up.

So yes blame me.

Dana, it is my fault that Ted figured it out that the purpose of Poliwings is to cause the break up and dissolution of SATA.

We are so good, maybe we should go after ISIS next.

I really hope I haven't said something that will get me sued.

Ted this is without a doubt the biggest bunch of garbage I have every seen.  For the record, you were at the first Poliwings!

There has been significant turn out at our group.  So for you to sit there and say that you will use your time my wisely and hang around with people who want change is just BS.  I am sorry that we created a positive atmosphere to casually get together and discuss politics.

Take the tinfoil hat off for a few minutes.  Not everything in life is a conspiracy theory.  You and I both had good discussions since the last election (at SATA for one) yet you continue to harp and dwell on events from a year ago.  Move on!  For someone that wants to make change you sure do like to dwell in the past.

It is true that the only council members to show up have been Osbourne, Heron, Perfontaine and Broadhead.  I personally (and has Kevin) time and time again extended the invitation to Hughes and MacKay.  We have had Shelley Bermanski come by, Stephan Kahn and Malcolm Parker to name a few.

So, Ted, don't come.  It is no skin off my back.  We created this gathering to be positive open forum casual discussion where difference of opinion are welcomed and discussed.  Sit here, complain about how the world and the city is out to get you, call me bias because I don't jump on the hate train, live in the past, don't offer any solutions just point out problems, be negative and make up ludicrous conspiracy theories for no apparent reason.

It was a scheduling conflict.  Get over it.

I don't trust you along with many other people.  You have given me no reason to.  Why would I want to sit with members of council who condoned an attack on myself and others for campaign contributions?  Not one of them spoke out or even appologized when a member of council  sent a letter to my employer.  Oh yes, and your buddy Neil sent one also during the election to try and get me fired.  You thought that was okay also.

Of course you are going to say that is old news.  It is, but I won't forget.  You never once decided to find out the truth about anything.  As far as I am concerned, you are a child who likes to gossip on social media and goes with the crowd to get their approval.  The typical politician.  The next election you will be like everyone else on the fab 5 and join the mayor's party to get elected.  Tell me, who got you appointed to a board?

Yes Ted I have heard this copy and paste over and over and over and over and over. Like I said before I thought we moved on. Shook hands, and had a good discussion on SATA. Guess I am mistaken. You even posted a nice comment in the SATA thread.

You can cry fowl all you want. I had nothing to do with anything you mentioned except for asking some questions on Twitter.

I am beyond tired of you trying to lump me in with your group of haters for whatever reason. And yes, I had so much underhanded sneeky things done to volunteer my free time for a city board. You have no idea what I had to do to get the role... (That is sarcasm, by the way).

I just don't get this attack on poliwings at all. It makes no sense. It has nothing to do with city council except they are invited. Kevin and I hashed this out to have positive political dialogue in the community.

You even came to the first one!

I am beside myself.
