I received the following email yesterday from Elke Blodgett of the city:

Hi Don,

Did you hear the CBC lady computer expert fairly early this morning re a new threat to computers? These crooks lock your entire computer and demand $300 in bit money to reconnect you. Alert not to use Internet Explorer, open any attachments, etc. and use a good anti-virus program. What’s a good anti virus program and do Mac lap tops have one? Maybe a warning on your site would be appreciated?

Well Elke, there is so much malware out there it is hard to keep up with them all. The vast majority of malware is aimed at PCs, not Macs so you can rest easy as I know you use a Mac.

There is one virus program for the Mac worth using, but only on a limited basis. It is called ClamXav and is free to download. It scans any Mac and quarantines any malware it might find. I only run it quarterly and it never finds anything on any of my Macs, but it does give me peace of mind to now they are clean.

I cannot speak to malware and PCs as I have no experience with them, so am posting this new thread in the hope that others who use PCs might be able to offer advice I am not aware of using Microsoft products.

Elke - go to download.com for free top rated virus/spy-ware software.    I would recommend Avast (see link)

Computer owners need to take some time to protect themselves - a simple "Top rated virus software" Google inquiry would solve everyone's problems.

Keep in mind Elke uses a Mac and I have given her the best program for the Mac. Any other so called Mac programs do not play nice with Macs. I know. Been using Macs since 1986 and never had an issue.

Shaw internet customers beware. There is an email going around warning that there have been attempts to login to your account and that you must click a link to prevent suspension of your account. It is bogus. Mark it as spam and delete it.

I'm also using Avast free antivirus for many years already. I trusted it and I could recommend it.
